Oh, the joy of being able to keep fit in your own home or backyard, weather permitting for that one, at a time and a pace that suits you, doing what you want to do and having the right equipment to make it happen.
You see I’ve never been one for going to the gym, even though I’m old enough to remember the 80’s when it seemed everyone I knew had a gym membership, they would say things like, I’ve just joined the gym, or I’ve just joined that “new gym” and they would show their bright shiny new gym pass.
It was a daily point in a lot of conversations, but weeks later you would ask how it was going, in ” the new gym” and they would say I’ve only been once I haven’t had the time, or it was very busy when I went, I’ll have to try and go on Saturday when I’m not working, and the best one of all is I never seem to have the time it was a waste of money.Back then you were usually locked into a year-long membership I never got it, yeah I liked to keep fit but I would do things I wanted to do at a time that suited me, like running cycling swimming and a lot of walking I’ve always enjoyed walking while sometimes discovering new places.
As I got older I started to realise that all the cardio was not giving me everything I need to keep in shape. As I started to put on more weight than I would like, so I had a look at my diet and made some changes there. You have to do that, you can’t just exercise weight gain away, and it’s a balance. Yeah I liked hill walking that’s really good resistance exercise, great for the legs but not the expanding waistline.
What is Resistance exercise?
Resistance exercise is using your own body weight or some sort of weight resistance equipment to strengthen your muscle groups, and in turn, burn fat, and as I wanted to do this in my own space I looked at what I could do at home.
Now there is a lot of resistance exercises you can do just using your own body weight, but I soon discovered that this could be made a lot easier and with quicker results if I used some resistance exercise equipment.
There is so much to choose from for every size of home space, whether you live in a small apartment or a large house, you can find something that will work for you.
Maybe be something static like a weight bench that you have the room for, or if you haven’t maybe a foldaway version that will get the job done, then there is the free Weight exercise equipment which I like to use great for home use.
You may have used some of this already or you may just be starting out trying to find something to keep you fit but you don’t have a lot of time let’s take a look at this:
Free Weight Exercise Equipment
What are free weights? and why are they called ” free weights” all weight equipment that you can hold in your hand and is not attached to a frame or wall is a free weight e.g. the Kettlebell my favourite, dumbbells I think of these as Kettlebell’s little Cousin which is not strictly true as their weights can be the same.
I just prefer the Kettlebell or a cannonball with a handle on as they are sometimes referred to, and then there are the barbells. Iron bars usually start from around 4 feet in length and can be as long as 7 feet, which you then put different, weight plates on all this equipment can be used by itself or with a weight bench. If this equipment is used in the right way it will give you great results you don’t need it all, it’s about finding what works for you and the level of fitness you want to achieve.
For me I’ve used dumbbells and Kettlebells, though Kettlebells is what I use all the time now. I’ve got great results with them and I love using them.
Space The Final Frontier
No, it’s not Klingons on the starboard bow. If you have never watched ”Star Trek” you won’t have a clue what I’m talking about, but I would find that hard to believe, even our old cat used to watch it back in the day.
Now space for your exercise equipment is no laughing matter, but it could be when you have the answer to the problem. See there is a lot more than free weight equipment available, and if you want to use a bigger range of equipment to target other fitness needs, having the space to be able to access it quickly is key if you are going to get the best from it and achieve your fitness goals.
So if you haven’t got a room to set up as your home gym, or an area where you can keep your equipment ready to use, its time to think about collapsible or adjustable equipment, which is all completely doable, without compromising on the quality or your fitness goals.
